About Earned Sick & Safe Time
Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time
Effective January 1, 2024, Minnesota's earned sick and safe time (ESST) law will require employers to provide paid leave to employees who work in the state. Minnesota's current sick and safe leave law remains in effect until December 31, 2023, and will be replaced by the new earned sick and safe time law on January 1, 2024.

Please note that the Duluth City Council passed an ordinance on December 18, 2023, that repealed the Duluth ESST ordinance. Minnesota’s ESST law took effect on January 1, 2024. Employers should coordinate with the Minnesota Department of Labor to ensure that their paid-leave policies are in compliance with state standards.
