NATURE OF INCIDENT: Officer Involved Shooting
CASE NO.: 11045982
INCIDENT DATE: 3/21/2011
INCIDENT TIME: 1:55PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 315 South 70th Avenue West

On Monday March 21st at 1:55PM Duluth Police Officers responded to a group home at 315 S. 70th Avenue West. The caller said that a staff person had been assaulted by a resident of the home.

Two officers arrived a short time later and found the group home on fire and heard the sounds of glass breaking. A 30 year old male resident of the Duluth group home met the officers in front of the home and proceeded to physically assault the officers. The officers attempted control the situation by using a tazer.  The resident then attempted to disarm the male officer. The female officer fired one shot and the resident stopped fighting. The resident was transported to a local hospital to treat the injury, which was consistent with a gunshot wound. There were several witnesses to this incident.

The male subject has been flown to Hennepin County Medical Center. The female Officer is still in a local hospital in stable condition. The staff person was treated at a local hospital and has been released.

The Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) has been requested to investigate the shooting. The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave which is operating policy for officer involved shootings.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call (218) 730-5050. The Duluth Police Department will have another media briefing as information is available.
