NATURE OF INCIDENT: Update on Officer Involved Shooting
CASE NO.: 11045982
INCIDENT DATE: 3/21/2011
INCIDENT TIME: 1:55PM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 315 South 70th Avenue West

On Monday March 21st at 1:55PM Duluth Police Officers responded to a group home at 315 S. 70th Avenue West. The caller said that a staff person had been assaulted by a resident of the home.

Two officers arrived a short time later and found the group home on fire and heard the sounds of glass breaking. A 25 year old male resident of the Duluth group home met the officers in front of the home and proceeded to physically assault the officers. The officers attempted to control the situation by using a taser. The resident then attempted to disarm the male officer. The female officer fired one shot and the resident stopped fighting. The resident was transported to a local hospital to treat the injury, which was consistent with a gunshot wound. The male resident had lived at the group home for one week. There were several witnesses to this incident.

The male subject was later flown to Hennepin County Medical Center due to the nature of his injury and is in critical condition. The female officer and staff person were both treated and released from local hospitals.

The Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) has been requested to investigate the shooting and their investigation is continuing. The male officer involved has been a member of the Duluth Police Department for 20 years and the female officer has been a member of the Duluth Police Department for 2 years. They are both currently on paid administrative leave which is operating policy for officer involved shootings.

The Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) has been requested to investigate the shooting and that investigation is continuing.   The Duluth Police Department is limited with amount of information that we can release at this time as it still is an active investigation and witnesses are still being interviewed.
