SUBJECT: April 11-15 is Severe Weather Awareness Week

[Duluth, MN] - The week of April 11– 15th, 2011 is "Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota". The goal is to educate Minnesotans on the need to prepare their own emergency plans for tornadoes and severe weather and to encourage the review and practice of those plans.
The City of Duluth will be conducting afternoon and evening Tornado Drills on Thursday, April 14th, 2011. The City of Duluth all-hazard warning sirens will be activated for the drills. Emergency management officials encourage all residents to create plans with their families and co-workers. Use this drill to exercise your plan. The sirens will be activated according to the following schedule:
Simulated Tornado Watch Period
1:00 P.M.
* National Weather Service (NWS) will issue a simulated tornado watch.
* The St. Louis County Warning System (civil defense pagers) will be activated.
A Simulated tornado watch message will be broadcast.
* National Weather Service will distribute a simulated tornado watch message over the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio.
1:45 P.M.
* The National Weather Service will issue a simulated tornado warning.
* Duluth Sirens will be activated at this time
* Participating facilities should conduct their tornado drill at this time.

6:55 P.M.
* The National Weather Service will issue a simulated tornado warning.
* Suggested test of family preparedness in the home and for second shift workers to test their preparedness procedures.
* Duluth Sirens would be activated at this time.
(End of Second Test)
Please remember the outdoor warning system is designed to notify people outdoors of an approaching storm. You should not depend on hearing warning sirens indoors. For indoor warnings, a NOAA weather radio is recommended.
