Mayor Ness will proclaim April 26
Community Development Day

[Duluth, MN] - The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program helps sustain communities and fuel local economies. The City of Duluth has received over $18 million in CDBG funds in the past five years, which leveraged $91 million in investments from other federal programs, foundations, self-generated fees, and private and public donations to address housing, public services, economic development, and public facilities. The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program has been in existence since 1975 and has provided local governments with resources to meet the needs of persons with low and moderate income.

In recognition of the CDBG program, Mayor Don Ness will join community members at a celebration tomorrow to proclaim April 26, 2011 Community Development Day at 10:30 am at the Damiano Center, located at 206 W 4th Street.

“The CDBG funds create a lasting impact in communities across the country as well as here in Duluth,” says Keith Hamre, the City’s Community Development Manager. “CDBG funds are critical to community sustainability, job development, and improving the local tax base. CDBG funded programs are aimed at helping individuals and families bridge the economic gap and bring them one step closer to long term prosperity.”

In Duluth, the CDBG funds have been used to assist 645 property owners in rehabilitating their homes, build 91 units for individuals with disabilities, provide health services for 23,018 individuals, provide 58,418 meals to persons who are homeless, construct 9,177 feet of sidewalks and assist a number of small businesses and provide employment opportunities in construction, home rehabilitation, and direct services making it a successful economic engine for Duluth.
