Mayor Ness proclaims Thursday, June 9 “Duluth Central Day”

[Duluth, MN] – For 117 years, Central High School has stood tall as the “anchor” of Duluth’s educational institutions and a place that welcomed students of all backgrounds. As part of the School District’s long-range facility plan, Central High School will be closed. June 9 is the last day of classes at Central.

Mayor Don Ness is a 1992 Duluth Central alumnus and the fourth generation in his family to graduate from Central. Mayor Ness will proclaim June 9, 2011 as “Duluth Central Day” and encourages alumni and friends to wear red and white.

“Central High School has played an important role in the history of Duluth. The original Central was built as a symbol of the importance of public education in Duluth, a beacon for opportunity and advancement for families from Duluth’s Hillside and beyond. My relatives were poor Norwegian immigrants living in small homes perched on the Hillside, yet they were given the privilege of a world-class education at Duluth Central,” said Mayor Don Ness.

“Central grads are rightfully proud of their school and for many of us, this is a sad day. But, it’s my hope that Central’s history will re-emerge in the coming years, taking a new modern form that stays true to the values and characteristics that have made this a great school. This is an end of an era, but it should not be an end to the history of this school.”
