Public Meeting to Discuss Traffic Control Changes

in East Hillside Neighborhood

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth Engineering division will be holding a public meeting on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 to discuss the proposed traffic control changes at the intersections of 12th and 14th Avenues East at Superior Street, First Street, Second Street and Third Street.  The changes will include signal removal, the addition of some stop signs, changes to on-street parking, and discuss impacts on trees.  The meeting will be at the Grant Community Center located at 901 E 11th Street at 6:00 PM.

The two avenues once served as the old trunk highway 61 routes through Duluth, and when I-35 was constructed to 26th Ave East, the need to carry large volumes of traffic on these corridors no longer existed.  These routes were part of extensive studies conducted for the Endion/East Hillside neighborhood which recommended that the avenues be converted from one way to two way routes to be more aligned with current traffic patterns, increase walkability, and provide more of a neighborhood feel.  This change also alleviates circuitous travel for both the residents and businesses in this area. The conversion took place in September 2010 allowing ample time for City Engineers to study traffic and pedestrian patterns and conduct intersection studies. The proposed changes are based on these traffic studies.
