21st Avenue East Closed to Traffic Starting July 5th.
The City of Duluth would like to inform motorists of the plan to close 21st Avenue East from Superior Street to Woodland Avenue starting Tuesday, July 5th. The road closure is necessary to conduct mill and overlay work which is part of the Reconditioning of 2009-2010: Reconditioning of Second Street Project.
The work which will be done is milling (removing) of 3" of existing bituminous surface, then overlaying (replacing) with new bituminous pavement. Replacing the existing striping will be done prior to reopening for traffic. Local company, Ulland Brothers is the contractor.
Motorists can expect closure of 21st Avenue East to continue for 2-3 weeks. Street signs will be erected to direct traffic to the detour route. Downbound Woodland Avenue traffic will be instructed to use Kent Road/24th Avenue East to Superior Street to 21st East. Upbound 21st Avenue East traffic will turn east on Superior Street, then up 24th East to Woodland Avenue. The crossing streets of 1st , 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th will remain open.
Accessibility for residents living on 21st Avenue East will be available, but residents should remain cognizant of changing conditions during the construction shutdown.
City of Duluth residents are asked to use alternate routes. (We would appreciate the media’s assistance in getting this message out to the community)
