On Sunday, August 28th, 2011 at 10:26PM Duluth Police attempted to stop a stolen 2002 Infiniti in Gary New Duluth.  The driver of the Infiniti did not stop the car and fled from police. The pursuit ended shortly after when the Infiniti crashed at 102nd Avenue West and Dickson Street.
 
The driver of the Infiniti, Amy Jean Sternal DOB 12/17/84 and the male passenger, Brian Cayce Butala DOB 9/10/1979 exited and ran from the vehicle after the crash. 
 
Officers chased Butala and Sternal into a residence in the 1400 block of 102nd Avenue West. Butala was armed with two handguns, fired three times at the officers after they entered the home. Sergeant Brad Wick returned fire, killing Butala. Sergeant Wick fired 12 shots.  The officers were not injured.
 
A 23 year old female resident of the house, Jessica Roos was hit in the leg by a bullet from Butala’s gun. Her wound was non life-threatening and was transported to a local hospital. 
 
Sternal was taken into custody and transported to the Saint Louis County Jail and has been formally charged with, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Receiving Stolen Property, Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle, and Aiding and Abetting an Offender to Avoid Arrest. More charges are possible.
 
Sergeant Brad Wick is a 26 year member of the Duluth Police Department and has been member of the K-9 Unit for 20 years and member of the Tactical Response Team for 15 years. He is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
 
The Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) continues to investigate the shooting.
