City of Duluth and WLSSD awarded $3 million

In federal grants

The City of Duluth and the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District officially signed project cooperative agreements today with the United States Army Corps of Engineers to accept $3 million in federal grants. The signing was attended by Congressman James Oberstar, Lt. Colonel James Davis of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, WLSSD Executive Director Marianne Bohren, Duluth Mayor Don Ness, and key staff. The grant funds will help with reconstruction of the Gary New Duluth pump station, repair of sewer lines in various parts of Duluth, and construction of a sanitary sewer overflow tank.

The funds are specifically designated towards:

  • City of DuluthEastInterceptorSanitarySewerOverflowStorageBasin (phase I) in the amount of $2,010,000
  • Cured-in-place pipe rehabilitation of sanitary sewers in Duluth in the amount of $375,000
  • WLSSD Gary New Duluth Pump Station reconstruction in the amount of $615,000.

Mayor Ness thanked Congressman Oberstar “for his leadership and for being a long time champion of investing in infrastructure, which is an investment in our future.”

“These funds will go towards ensuring we have reliable and well maintained pump stations which are important to achieving our mission of protecting Lake Superior,” says Marianne Bohren.

“We have the first line of responsibility to maintain water quality, and quality for the entire watershed. Given a chance, our water resources will rehabilitate. We are giving our water resources that chance today with this initiative,” said Congressman Oberstar.

The funding for the projects is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to the Water Resources Development Act section 569. The funds are overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
