Duluth fire crews evacuated two adults and four children from a four-plex at 1829 E. 2nd Street after responding at 8:23 p.m. on October 7th, 2011 to a report of a carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Carbon monoxide levels as high as 332 parts per million were measured in the utility room, where a possible plugged oil water heater flue may have caused the problem. Two of the four apartments were also found to have dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide, resulting in two adults and two children being transported to a local hospital via Gold Cross Ambulance Service for further medical assessment.

This incident is an excellent example of how carbon monoxide detectors can save lives. If the detector had not provided a warning that the deadly carbon monoxide had reached dangerous levels, the result very likely would have been tragic. The Duluth Fire Department reminds everyone that it is extremely important that every residence have both working carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors installed.
