The Duluth Police Department has seen a recent increase in day time residential burglaries. Most of the homes burglarized had doors that were left unlocked.   The main items being stolen were jewelry and electronics. Duluth Police and local law enforcement have active and open burglary investigations. Some of these recent investigations have resulted in arrests. We continue to monitor trends and patterns in burglaries weekly to better respond and prevent these crimes.

 

The Duluth Police Department would like to remind residents to secure their property and to look after their neighbor’s property as well. We are asking for their help by having them consider implementing these crime prevention tips:

 

-Ensure all doors and windows are locked and the locks are in working order.  Never leave a spare key outside. Also, use a double lock system, one that can’t be easily accessed through a broken window.

 

-Keep your garage door closed and locked.

 

-Don’t allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or flyers to build up while you are away. Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly.

 

-Keep your jewelry in a secure location, such as a safe (just make sure it is secure, mount it to the floor or wall). Keep a photo record of your jewelry so it can be identified if it is ever stolen and later recovered.

 

-Keep a record of the model and serial numbers of valuable items such as televisions, gaming consoles, firearms etc. Take pictures or videotape your home, especially any distinguishing marks on items. You can also engrave your name or a number onto some of your more expensive things.

 

-Keep your vehicle locked. Do not leave valuable items, such as a purse or electronic items in plain view. Take these items with you. If you must leave the items in the vehicle put them in your trunk.

 

-Be alert in protecting not only your home, but neighbors homes as well. Be aware and report suspicious persons and vehicles to law enforcement. Be cautious of strangers and when in doubt, call law enforcement. Remember that burglars often park near their targets and approach on foot so it is important to report suspicious vehicles parked in your neighborhood.

 

-Get to know your neighbors. Contact your local neighborhood police substation if you are interested in joining or starting a citizen patrol group or neighborhood watch in your area. Look out for your neighbor’s property as you would want them to look out for yours.
