NATURE OF INCIDENT: Special Traffic Enforcement

INCIDENT DATE: 10/27/2011
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth and Surrounding Area

The Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Hermantown Police Department, Proctor Police Department, UMD Police Department, Floodwood Police Department and Minnesota State Patrol conducted increased “Click It or Ticket” seat belt patrols during one of the state’s largest belt enforcement campaigns of the year, October 14 -27. The campaign aims to increase belt use and stop preventable deaths and injuries.

Officers from the agencies that were assigned to the effort made 364 driver contacts resulting in 67 citations issued, 33 warnings given and 4 arrests made.

Statewide during the last three years, 409 unbelted motorists were killed and 814 suffered serious, life-altering injuries. Seatbelts must be worn correctly-low and snug across the hips; shoulder straps should never be tucked under an arm or behind the back.

With the help of local media and increased public awareness, the local October “Click It or Ticket” campaign was successful.
