NATURE OF INCIDENT: Motor Vehicle Accident/Fatality-Man Arrested

INCIDENT LOCATION: 2900 block of Woodland Avenue

 

 On Thursday, January 19th, 2012 at 7:29 AM their was a two vehicle traffic crash in the 2900 block of Woodland Avenue.  A green 2001 Ford F250 SuperDuty pickup was northbound on Woodland Avenue when it crossed the center dividing line and collided head on with a southbound 1995 Ford Taurus.

The 65 year old female driver and the 13 year old male passenger in the Ford Taurus were seriously injured. After a lengthy extrication process by Duluth Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel, the female identified as Paula Bergren of Duluth, was transported to Saint Luke’s Hospital where she died of her injuries. The male was transported to Saint Mary’s Hospital where he has been admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit with critical, life threatening injuries. Both occupants had been wearing seatbelts.

 

The 19 year old male driver of the pickup was not injured. He was identified as Hawk Edwards of Duluth. On the part of the pickup, excessive speed was a contributing factor and the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Edwards was arrested for Criminal Vehicular Operation resulting in Death and Criminal Vehicular Operation resulting in great bodily harm. He is being held in the Saint Louis County Jail pending formal charges.

 

Weather and road conditions did not contribute to this crash.
