On Saturday, March 17th, 2012 the Duluth Police Department along with our local law enforcement partners, the Minnesota State Patrol, Saint Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Hermantown PD, Proctor PD, Floodwood PD and UMD PD had extra officers patrolling Duluth streets to make sure St. Patrick’s Day Night was a safe one.
Officers assigned to the enhanced enforcement made one hundred twenty one driver contacts, resulting in four arrests, two for DWI, one for a Controlled Substance Violation. Additionally, seven speeding tickets, one seatbelt ticket and tickets for six other violations were written. Officers issued one hundred eighteen warnings and noted that five designated driver contacts were made.
Some tickets and a few arrests were made again this year, but it was clear that the number of squads working was a deterrent. People’s driving behavior and making safe decisions about drinking and driving was affected. The collaborative effort made by local law enforcement, the media and community helped to make St. Patrick’s Day 2012 a safe one.
