Duluth Police recognized by State officials for seat belt campaign
[Duluth, MN] – The City of Duluth Police Department is being recognized by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety for its successful seat belt mobilization efforts in May 2011. The Police Department will be recognized at the May 29, 2012 City Council meeting at 6:50 pm.
This award is given to the department due to its demonstrated innovative enforcement efforts, prompt and accurate reporting, and effective media campaigns to raise awareness. The department will receive a new Pro Laser speed detector gun. The Duluth Police Department last received this award in 2006. There are 48 agencies chosen for incentive awards throughout the state each year.
The Duluth Police Department and its partner agencies stopped 333 traffic stops, issued 80 citations and 36 warnings related to seatbelts. Statewide during the last three years, 409 unbelted motorists were killed and 814 suffered serious, life-altering injuries. Seatbelts must be worn correctly-low and snug across the hips; shoulder straps should never be tucked under an arm or behind the back.
