SUBJECT: Major Disaster Declared for 13 Minnesota Counties and Three Tribal Nations following Severe Storms and Flooding

MAJOR DISASTER DECLARED FOR THIRTEEN MINNESOTA COUNTIES, THREE TRIBAL NATIONS FOLLOWING SEVERE STORMS AND FLOODING

Areas Now Eligible for Federal Public Assistance

Governor Mark Dayton today secured a major federal disaster declaration for thirteen Minnesota counties and three tribal nations following severe storms and flooding that struck areas of the state in June.

Preliminary damage assessments revealed more than $108 million in costs and damages. Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Crow Wing, Dakota, Goodhue, Kandiyohi, Lake, Meeker, Pine, Rice, Sibley and St. Louis counties as well as the Fond du Lac Tribal Nation, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe and the Grand Portage Tribal Nation are included in the disaster declaration.

Mayor Don Ness Statement:
"We are thankful that the President moved so quickly on this declaration.  This is a critical step in our rebuilding process, now we can move forward with confidence that FEMA will be there to assist our region.  While the rebuilding process will be lengthy, it is reassuring to see the level of cooperation and professionalism in during these first two weeks.
 
We owe a great debt of gratitude to the Governor and his staff as well as our congressional delegation for their excellent work in support of achieving this important declaration.
 
Now we can turn our attention to the important assessment work with FEMA to rebuild our communities. This was an important step. We greatly appreciate the leadership of the Governor and his staff in getting their work done so quickly."
