NATURE OF INCIDENT: Motor Vehicle/Pedestrian Accident with Injuries
CASE NO.: 12153343
INCIDENT DATE: 8/11/2012
INCIDENT TIME: 9:10 AM
INCIDENT LOCATION: 12th Avenue East and Superior Street

On 8/11/2012 at 9:10 AM Duluth Police responded to a report of a pedestrian that was hit by a motor vehicle in the area of 12th Avenue East and Superior Street. Police soon learned that the vehicle had driven away from the scene and had parked in a nearby parking lot. Witnesses reported that the driver of the vehicle had fled the scene on foot. Using the information and descriptions given by several witnesses in the area, Duluth Police were able to locate and arrest the driver of the vehicle on the Lakewalk a short time later.

A subsequent investigation revealed that a Honda Civic driven by Robert Nicholas Buehlman, 29, of Bayfield, Wisconsin was traveling eastbound on Superior Street when he drove on the right shoulder around two vehicles stopped for a red light at 12th Avenue East. Buehlman continued through the red light and onto the south sidewalk of Superior Street where he struck Ashen-Shugar-Aren Diehl, a 33 year old female, resident of Duluth who was walking with her 9 year-old daughter. Diehl was taken to St Luke’s Hospital where she is currently being treated with life-threatening injuries. Diehl’s daughter was not injured.

Buehlman is currently being held at the Saint Louis County Jail pending formal charges of Criminal Vehicular Operation and other related offenses.

The Duluth Police Crash Investigation Unit continues to investigate this incident. No further information is available at this time.
