The Duluth Police Department Explorers Post is recruiting! The police explorers program is for youths aged 14 to 20 (those over 18 must be enrolled in a law enforcement program) with an interest in learning more about law enforcement! It is specifically designed to provide leadership experience, teach youth life skills and character building, give those opportunities to be a part of their community by performing community services, and teach them the duties and responsibilities of police officers.
A participating explorer is expected to go to the bi-weekly meetings before winter holidays and weekly meetings thereafter on Sunday evenings, followed by the four-day state competition in Rochester, MN in April. Our eight advisors (all police officers on the Duluth Police Dept) teach the explorers a variety of topics, some including burglary investigation, traffic stops, community policing, handcuffing, and interviewing and interrogation! Explorers also get to go through scenarios, interview suspects, and conduct traffic stops!
Anyone interested can attend our introductory meeting with the explorers advisors on Tuesday, Sept 16th, 2012 at 6pm at the Public Safety Building (2030 Arlington Ave) in the training room. Both interested explorers and parents are welcome to join us! There will be refreshments provided. Please contact Officer Amber Peterson (aweber@duluthmn.gov or 218-730-5606) or Officer Chris Johnson (cjohnson0@duluthmn.gov) with any questions!
