New Name for Public Parking Lot by Canal Park Piers
[Duluth, MN] – The public parking lot located on the lake side of the 500 block of Canal Park Drive has been renamed the “Lighthouse Lot.” Formerly called the “Marine Museum Lot” and sometimes the “Canal Park Lot,” the new name highlights the unique location of the facility and serves to differentiate it from the nearby Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, which is not affiliated with the parking lot.
The Lighthouse Lot is the closest public parking lot to the Duluth North Pier Lighthouse and to the outer and inner lighthouses on the south pier. The Lighthouse Lot offers many on-site amenities, including eateries (Hoovie’s Popcorn Wagon and Crabby Ol’ Bills), seasonal horse-drawn carriage rides (Bayfront Carriages and Top Hat Carriage Service), multi-person bicycle rentals (Wheel Fun Rentals), immediate access to the Duluth Lakewalk, and spectacular views of Lake Superior. In addition, the lot is an easy walk from a multitude of dining and entertainment options in the Canal Park business district.
Since early August, the facility now features a gateless pay-by-space configuration. Upon parking, simply note your parking space number and input it at the automated pay station or via the cell phone payment system. The pay station accepts coins (nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar coins), cash ($1, $2, $5, and $10 bills), and Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit and debit cards. Receipts are entirely optional and do not need to be displayed on vehicle dashboards. Parking fees are $2 for the first 2 hours and $1 for each additional hour. The maximum parking fee is $10 for 12 to 24 hours.
The 90-space lot also offers a pay-by-phone option. Simply call 866-234-7275 and then follow the voice prompts to input the parking facility’s location number (3107), your vehicle’s parking space number, and the length of stay you desire to purchase. The pay-by-phone system accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit and debit cards. Those who pay via phone receive a text message reminder approximately 5 to 15 minutes before their parking expires with the option to purchase more time.
Those whose original payment is made at the pay station also have the option to purchase more time via the pay-by-phone system.
The maximum allowable parking stay at the facility has been extended from two to twenty-four hours. The Lighthouse Lot is owned by the Duluth Economic Development Authority and managed by Interstate Parking Company of Minnesota, which may be reached at 218-727-PARK.
