2030 NORTH ARLINGTON AVENUE
[Duluth]- The Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Hermantown Police Department, Proctor Police Department, UMD Police Department, Floodwood Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol are holding a press conference tomorrow, October 10th, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Public Safety Building Training Room, 2030 North Arlington Avenue as part of a kickoff to the “Click It of Ticket” October Enhanced Seatbelt Enforcement Effort statewide.
Agenda:
· Duluth Police Lieutenant Leigh Wright will outline the goals and objectives of the “Click It of Ticket” October Seatbelt Enforcement and announce a grant awarded to the Duluth Police Department to add extra traffic enforcement during our Towards Zero Death campaign beginning October, 2012 and running through 2013.
· Duluth Police Officer Chris Lee will be acknowledged by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association and receive a commendation and certificate of appreciation. This will be presented by Frank Scherf, from the MN Department of Public Safety for Officer Lee’s outstanding work during the May 2012 “Click It of Ticket” mobilization. Officer Lee worked 3 shifts, for a total of 18 hours and conducted 71 traffic stops, wrote 15 citations for seatbelt violations, 9 citations for speed, 4 driving after revocations, 20 equipment violations and issued 49 warnings.
· Minnesota State Patrol Sergeant Neil Dickenson will present a “Saved by the Belt” award to a victim of a recent crash that occurred in Hermantown, MN in which seatbelt use prevented death or serious injury to the occupants.
· We will have a vehicle displayed in front of the Public Safety Building that was driven in a single vehicle crash on March 23rd, 2012 on Highway 61 in Pine County. The 16 year old female driver was killed. She was texting and drove off the roadway and was not wearing her seatbelt. A passenger in the vehicle who was wearing a seatbelt survived the crash. The family of the victim made the vehicle available to the Pine County Sheriff’s Office to use for display to increase awareness of the perils of texting and driving and not wearing a seatbelt. Minnesota State Patrol Sergeant Neil Dickenson was one of the emergency responders who worked the accident.
