The Duluth Police Department is offering these Halloween tips to keep your kids safe…

Knowing that Halloween night brings out hundreds of kids, here are some simple tips to ensure that you and your kids have a safe Halloween night.

1.       Make sure your child’s costume fits well and does not create a trip hazard for the child. If the costume has a wig or a mask, make sure that it does not obstruct a child’s view from hazards they may encounter while walking through neighborhoods or block views of cars that may be driving around. Please make sure that your child also walks on sidewalks (when provided) and cross at designated crosswalks. This will ensure they do not run out between parked cars and come into contact with motorists on the street. If possible, place brighter clothing or reflective components to your child’s costume for better visibility at night and always carry a flashlight so you can be seen at greater distances.
2.       While dressing up and getting free candy is great fun for any child, remember that it is always possible that an occasional piece of candy could have been tampered with. Parents please make sure to inspect all candy before your child consumes it to ensure it is safe for them and an adult should always walk with children as they are out trick or treating.
3.       On such a busy, dark night with hundreds of kids running around, emergency identification information should be placed discreetly inside clothing of small children, in case of accidental separation from parents. This should include the child’s name, parent’s name and a phone number that a parent would answer if called such as a cellular phone.
4.       Lastly, parents take children to more well lit neighborhoods where you are familiar with the residents and the houses.
The Duluth Police Department would remind everyone to be safe, have fun and if you see anyone suspicious please call 911 with information documenting description of person and direction of travel.
