SUBJECT: Lake Avenue skywalk extension now open
BY: Pakou Ly
The grand opening of the Lake Avenue skywalk extension, connecting the Tech Village to the existing system to the west, took place today with Mayor Don Ness, Bill Bennett of LHB and several representatives from local businesses, the Greater Downtown Council, and the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce present.
“This long awaited project is perhaps the most important extension of our system since the Northwest Passage connected the DECC to downtown in 1976,” said Mayor Ness. “This project was completed $200,000 under budget and did not use street construction funds.”
RJS Construction Group in Superior and LHB are the team that constructed the skywalk extension. Work started in late February this year and was recently completed. The total construction cost of the project is $2.62 million and is $200,000 under budget.
“The City of Duluth is proud of the hard work and perseverance of the community, business owners, and City staff to complete this project. It could not have been possible without the patience and cooperation of partners such as the Greater Downtown Council, the contractors, and the local businesses,” says Mayor Ness.
