[Duluth] MN - The Duluth Police Department, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Hermantown Police Department, Proctor Police Department, Floodwood Police Department, UMD Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol had extra officers patrolling Duluth streets throughout the month of December as part of enhanced DWI patrols to take impaired drivers of the road.
Officers assigned to the enhanced enforcement made 678 driver contacts, resulting in 42 arrests, 18 for DWI. Officers issued 146 total citations and 687 warnings.
Tickets were issued and some arrests were made again this year, but it was clear that the number of squads working was a deterrent. People’s driving behavior and making safe decisions about drinking and driving was affected. The collaborative effort made by local law enforcement, the media and community helped to make the 2012 December Holiday Season a safe one!
The efforts conducted by Area Law Enforcement are components of the state’s Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) traffic safety program. A primary vision of the TZD program is to create a safe driving culture in Minnesota in which motorists support a goal of zero road fatalities by practicing and promoting safe and smart driving behavior. TZD focuses on the application of four strategic areas to reduce crashes — education, enforcement, engineering and emergency trauma response.
