Woodland Avenue to open Friday, November 6
Woodland Avenue will open between Kent Road to St. Marie Street beginning Friday, November 6th at noon. The Woodland Avenue project is part of the Mayor's new street improvement strategy which resulted in 18 miles of street improvements this summer and will improve 22 miles of streets in 2010. These projects were not funded by stimulus dollars and did not use debt financing. Woodland Avenue is a main thoroughfare connecting residents to local businesses, college institutions, and the freeway.
“The full reconstruction of Woodland Avenue was the crown jewel of our street improvement program this summer. The completed street is a significant upgrade on one of the most heavily traveled streets in Duluth and reflects our renewed commitment to aggressively upgrade our city streets," said Mayor Ness.
Phase I of this road project consisted of the complete reconstruction of .55 miles of Woodland Avenue which included sanitary sewer replacement, storm sewer replacement, water main replacement, signal system upgrades and new concrete encased conduit for Qwest. Major items of work also included bituminous and concrete removal, common excavation, granular borrow, aggregate base class 5, bituminous paving, concrete driveway pavement, concrete sidewalk, and concrete curb and gutter.
Woodland Avenue Phase II, from Norton Street to Arrowhead Road, will resume next spring. The City of Duluth would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation during construction.
