A recount for the City Council Fourth Council District has been requested by candidate Gordon Grant.
The recount will be conducted pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, Section 204C.36 and the Rules of the Minnesota Secretary of State.
The election results initially certified by the City Council are Kerry Gauthier 1,932 votes,
Gordon Grant 1,779 votes and 4 write-in votes, for a total of 3,715 votes cast for this office.
The statute states in part for a “Required” recount that a losing candidate “... may request a recount of the votes cast for the nomination or election to that office if the difference between the vote cast for that candidate and for a winning candidate for nomination or election is less than one-half of one percent (.005) of the total votes counted for that office”, with the city incurring the expense for the recount. For this office, .005 percent of the total votes cast is 19 votes.
Since the difference in vote total is 153 votes, this recount falls within the “Discretionary” section of State Statute 204C.36 subd 2, where Mr. Grant will incur the expense of the recount.
The date, time and location of the recount will be determined on Thursday, November 12, 2009.
