NATURE OF INCIDENT: Duluth Man Arrested for Heroin Sales

INCIDENT LOCATION: 3900 block West 5th Street

On Thursday, May 2nd, 2013 at 5:10 PM Duluth Police officers and investigators with the Lake Superior Drug & Violent Crime Task Force were conducting pre-warrant surveillance at a residence in the 3900 block of West 5th Street.

The resident and subject of the investigation Nino Alonzo Franklin, a 38 year old male, arrived home and spotted an unmarked squad car and fled in his GMC Yukon, ramming an occupied unmarked squad car and driving through a playground across the street.  Several citizens called 911 shortly after and reported the vehicle had crashed near 57th Avenue West and Medina Street. Investigators located Franklin on foot a short distance away and he was arrested. Investigators re-traced the route that Franklin took when he fled on foot and located $4,600.00 in US currency behind a residence.
Investigators executed the search warrant at his residence in the 3900 block of West 5th Street and located 13.2 grams of heroin, scales, packing along with other evidence of drug sales. Also, 2 firearms were located along with several EBT cards that Franklin had been taking in trade for heroin. During an interview with Franklin he admitted to selling heroin to the person that we had an overdose call on 4/26/13, where that person had to be hospitalized.
Nino Alonzo Franklin has the following convictions in Minnesota:
2005 - 2nd Degree Burglary, 5th Degree Domestic Assault, Obstructing Legal Process (Misdemeanor)
2006 - 3rd Degree Burglary
2008 - 5th Degree Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance, 5th Degree Domestic Assault
2009 - Predatory Offender Knowingly Violates Registration Requirements or Intentionally Provides False Information (Felony)
2012 - 2nd Degree Burglary
Nino Franklin was transported to the Saint Louis County Jail and has been formally charged with 1st Degree Possession with a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell and 2 Counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
