INCIDENT LOCATION: 300 block East Locust Street

On Tuesday, June 11th, 2013 at 1:59 AM Duluth Police were called to a single vehicle crash in the area of Orange Street and Arlington Avenue where the driver had fled.

Two officers responded to the area of the 300 block of East Locust Street associated with the registered owner of the vehicle and one officer encountered a male subject outside with a handgun. The officer radioed for assistance and shouted repeated verbal commands in an attempt to get the subject to comply. The second officer in the area responded to assist the first officer. Both officers repeated loud verbal commands to attempt to get the subject to comply. The encounter lasted for over 3 minutes. Officers attempted to take him into custody when the subject reached for the area where the gun was located. Both officers fired their duty weapons. The 26 year old male resident of Duluth was pronounced dead at the scene. His name will be released pending positive identification and full family notifications.
One of the officers involved is a 7 year veteran of department and the second officer is a 4 year veteran.  Neither officer was injured. The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure in these cases. 
The Duluth Police Department requested the Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) to investigate this incident.  No additional information will be released at this time. Updates will be available as the investigation progresses.
