On Saturday, April 27th, 2013 at 3:13 AM Duluth Police were called to a residence in the 2200 block of West 2nd Street on the report of a shooting. Officers arrived and located a 27 year old male with a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Initial investigation revealed that a resident had a gathering there with several individuals. After the victim was shot, the suspects fled the area. This does not appear to be a random incident.
The victim was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health (St. Mary’s) hospital for a life-threatening injury. The victim is stable, but in critical condition.
The Duluth Police Department is following up on several leads. If anyone has any information about this incident they are asked to call 911. This is an active investigation. No further information is available at this time.
UPDATE:
After continued follow-up investigation on this case by the Duluth Police Department Violent Crimes Unit the suspect in this shooting has been identified as James Earl Wilkinson DOB: 01/01/1993, who is a resident of Duluth.
The Saint Louis County Attorney’s Office has formally charged Wilkinson with 1st Degree Assault and 2nd Degree Assault. He is currently in custody at the Douglas County Jail for unrelated charges and will now go through the extradition process.
The victim in this case who has been released from the hospital required invasive surgical procedures to repair the injury from the bullet wound and to date retains significant scarring. Further, bullet fragments are still lodged in his body that cannot be removed.
The Duluth Police Departments would like to thank the public for their help with this investigation. Several leads were provided that proved invaluable. The Duluth Police Department encourages anyone with information about this crime to contact the Duluth Police Department Violent Crimes Unit at (218) 730-5050.
