A Duluth Police Investigator assigned to the Lake Superior Forensic Technology (LSFT) & Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force received information that child pornography was found by a private forensic firm on a computer used by employees of the Salvation Army in Duluth.

Further investigation identified the suspect as Peter Jay Olson, a 47 year old male resident of Duluth who was an employee of the Salvation Army. Numerous data storage devices were confiscated during subsequent search warrants and through expert forensic analysis of these devices they revealed the presence of hundreds of images of child pornography. Investigators were able to determine that Peter Olson downloaded and possessed these images. Follow-up interviews and investigation have further revealed that Olson had sexually assaulted a juvenile male between the age of 10 & 12 years old.
On June 25th, 2013 Olson was interviewed and subsequently arrested by Investigators from the Duluth Police Department Sex Crimes & Neglect (SCAN) Unit & LSFT & ICAC Task Force. Olson was transported to the Saint Louis County Jail and booked for 2 counts of 1st Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, Possession of Pictorial Representation of Minors (Possession of Child Pornography) & Use of a Minor in a Sexual Performance (Manufacture of Child Pornography).
