Mayor Ness invites the community to September 11 events today
 
[Duluth, MN] - Today marks the 12th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11. President Obama has issued a Presidential Proclamation inviting all Americans to observe today as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. In Duluth, Join Mayor Ness as he presents proclamations at two events today to commemorate and honor the lives lost on that tragic day as well as the men and women who continually dedicate their lives for freedom.
 
· At 11 a.m., representatives from Duluth Sister Cities International, Duluth Mayor Don Ness and others will strike the Japanese peace bell near Enger Tower to pray for world peace and to remember and honor the 2,973 people killed in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. The ringing also will be in honor of those killed and devastated in northeastern Japan by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. At the same moment Duluth’s bell is rung, a peace bell in Duluth’s sister city of Isumi City, Japan, also will be rung.
 
· Noon, at the Statue of Liberty near the western end of the Duluth Auditorium, the Northland Veterans Service Committee and others will hold a memorial ceremony. Veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are especially invited
 
All United States flags are to be flown at half-staff in honor of today.
