Public Meeting on Gary-New Duluth Small Area Plan & Health Impact Assessment Scheduled
[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth invites the public to attend the Gary-New Duluth Small Area Plan Public meeting on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Stowe Elementary School located at 715 101st Avenue West. At this meeting, the City’s Planning Division will present the proposed recommendations collected previously from steering committee members and the public. City staff will gather public comment on the Steering Committee’s proposed recommendations. This is the second public meeting of the Gary-New Duluth Small Area Plan.
The Gary-New Duluth Small Area Plan builds on the goals, policies, and implementation strategies in the City’s 2006 Comprehensive Land Use Plan and serves to augment the Comprehensive Land Use Plan by providing more detailed recommendations. The goal of the Small Area Plan process is to study the area in greater detail to develop and implement a long term plan that will maintain but also enhance the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood. The planning process began in June of 2013 with the help of a Plan Committee comprised of residents, businesses, and interested stakeholders. The process is expected to conclude in early 2014 with a report presented to the Planning Commission prior to City Council adoption.
As part of the planning process, the City is working in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health to complete a health impact assessment (HIA) on the Gary/New Duluth Small Area Plan. The HIA will assess the potential health impacts of goals and policies identified in the Small Area Plan. The HIA provides an opportunity to address the issues residents are concerned about and improve the health of residents in the community.
