NATURE OF INCIDENT: Enforcement of parking regulations due to recent snowfall
CASE NO.:
INCIDENT DATE: 2/22/2014
INCIDENT TIME:
INCIDENT LOCATION: Duluth, MN
Duluth Police Department's increased parking enforcement.
The recent snow accumulation is posing significant challenges for vehicle and pedestrian travel. Further aggravating these challenges are vehicles parked in violation of the 24 hour parking and calendar parking ordinances. There are numerous vehicles which still have not been moved since our last snowfall.
The 24 hour parking ordinance Sec. 33-85, states that no vehicle shall be left standing or parked more than 24 consecutive hours on any street or highway within the city. The alternate side parking ordinance Sec. 33-97.8 states that all vehicles parked on a public roadway must conform to calender parking. The change over period for calender parking is every Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There is also sections of roads in the city which have signs posted no parking 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.
Vehicles parked in violation of these ordinances make travel hazardous and can impede emergency vehicle response of ambulance and fire vehicles which require more clearance on roadways. Compliance with parking ordinances facilitates for much needed timely snow removal. The Duluth Police Department will be engaged in parking enforcement on city streets focusing on snowbirds in violation of 24 hour parking and calendar parking violations. These violations can result in $21 parking citations and tow and impound fees starting at about $100.
We are asking all vehicle owners parking on city streets to comply with all parking ordinances, especially those related to road maintenance.
