Citizens asked to use road sand collection sites

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth wants to remind residents that our storm drains lead directly to our streams and Lake Superior and impact natural fish habitats. Any road sand that is swept from sidewalks, driveways or boulevards into city streets will wash directly into our waterways. The best way to dispose of road sand is to sweep it up and bring it to one of the eight dump sites that the City has set up around Duluth

Street sweepers collect road sand from the streets as quickly as possible in the spring, and any additional help from citizens is greatly appreciated. If it is not picked up before the spring rains, the sand washes into our streams and can damage trout habitat.

The collection sites are marked with black silt fencing and a sign. They are open to all Duluth residents to drop off road sand from their sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Sites are located at the following locations:

  • 34the Ave East and Valley Drive
  • Chester Bowl
  • Duluth Heights Community Club
  • Lester Park
  • Piedmont Community Center
  • Stowe School
  • Wheeler Field
  • Woodland Community Center

Please dispose of yard waste, leaves, grass clippings, and brush at the WLSSD yard waste site. Visit the WLSSD website for more information about this program, www.wlssd.com/compost.php

Catch basins lead directly to our streams and Lake Superior, not to the wastewater treatment plant. Please do not dump anything into them. Contact the City of Duluth at 730-4130 during business hours or 730-4100 on evenings and weekends to report any illegal discharge or dumping.
