Restoration of Large Eroding Bank on Amity Creek to Start

[Duluth, MN] - Starting this week, August 4, 2014 , the South St. Louis Soil & Water Conservation District and the City of Duluth, will be coordinating the restoration of a large, eroding bank on Amity Creek between Bridges 4 and 5. The flood of 2012 altered many stretches of the creek, destroying fish habitat and creating many unstable banks. Amity Creek, a designated trout stream, is currently on Minnesota’s impaired waters list for turbidity (too much muddiness) in the water. This project will protect the creek from being impacted further by the eroding bank through the use of toewood bankfull benches, a more natural alternative to riprap (using a layering technique of logs, branches, brush and fill) that not only stabilizes a bank but also provides excellent fish habitat. The channel adjacent to the bank will also be stabilized to allow for better fish passage.

While the construction is happening, the stream will be diverted around the construction areas to prevent impacts to the water. It will also involve the creation of a temporary access road off of Seven Bridges Road for equipment to gain access to the project site. All disturbed areas will be restored upon completion of the project.

This project is being completed under DNR Public Waters Work Permit Number 2001-1172. All questions can be directed to Kate Kubiak at the South St. Louis Soil & Water Conservation District at 218-723-4946 or at kate.kubiak@southstlouisswcd.org.

The City reminds everyone that catch basins lead directly to our streams and Lake Superior, not to the wastewater treatment plant. Please do not dump anything into them. Contact the City of Duluth at 730-4130 during business hours or 730-4100 on evenings and weekends to report any illegal discharge or dumping.
