At 11:01 this morning, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from 1434 E. Superior St. The first rig arrived and confirmed visible smoke on a three story structure, and started to make entry. Upon arrival of the Assistant Chief, the smoke was visible at the roof edge and appeared to be getting into the attic, a second alarm was struck and fire crews began to attack the fire. Vertical ventilation was started to open up the roof and interior crews fought the fire with attack lines. The fire was brought under control, then salvage and overhaul operations were started to protect interior property and to search for hidden fire. There was a Minnesota Power worker going by the scene and stopped to cut the power to the building. Gold Cross also was on scene to provide an on scene ambulance. The Duluth Police Department was on scene to provide area and traffic control. The building damage is estimated to be in excess of $150,000. Twenty nine Firefighters responded to this fire and Thirteen were called back to fill reserve apparatus and bolster companies. One minor injury was reported. The buildings four apartments were not occupied at the time due to a previous incident at this location. This fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Department Fire Marshal's office.
