City of Duluth
Receives Excellence in Economic Development Award from
the International Economic Development Council

[Duluth, MN] - The City of Duluth received a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award for its involvement in the Clyde Park Project with owner Alessandro Giuliani, in the category of Real Estate Redevelopment & Reuse for communities with populations of 25,000 - 200,000 from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

The honor was presented at an awards ceremony during the IEDC Annual Conference, which was held October 19-22, in Fort Worth, Texas.

"Economic development efforts have long been a keystone in the quest to bolster the economy and improve quality of life in every locality across the country," said Bill Sproull, IEDC chair. "As the nation continues to tackle challenges in the midst of global uncertainty, these efforts have taken on an even greater significance. With this award, we laud trendsetting organizations like City of Duluth for leading the charge."

Clyde Park is a $26+ million, multi-faceted, 5 year redevelopment project located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Duluth that creatively transformed a vacant iron works manufacturing facility into a modern multi-purpose restaurant/event center, Duluth Heritage Sports Center, Boys and Girls Club and a Children's Museum.

The strong partnership between the City of Duluth and Clyde’s owner, Alessandro Giuliani, facilitated the $3.3 million clean-up and reconstruction of utilities on this historic real estate turning it into a valuable community asset hosting 500 events, welcoming 100,000 visitors, and serving 700 youth annually over the past several years. The City and multiple community entities and individuals were partners in fulfilling Giuliani’s vision to create a welcoming venue for the community that also serves as an economic anchor to revitalize the neighborhood.

The Clyde Park Project preserves the historical significance of Clyde Park and its contributions to the nation by salvaging and reusing 3 of the original 19 buildings, 250,000 bricks, wood beams, wood flooring, windows, doors, and industrial cranes.

IEDC's Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognize the world’s best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials, and the year’s most influential leaders. These awards honor organizations and individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban, and rural communities.
