Difficult Travel Conditions Expected to Continue Into the Evening, City Advises Caution
City crews continue to plow and treat streets, yet unnecessary travel not advised
[Duluth, MN] – The City of Duluth continues to advise residents, especially drivers, to take caution while traveling as roads remain snow-covered and slippery. Unnecessary travel is not advised. City crews have been out since 9:30 a.m. plowing and treating roads with salt and sand. All plow trucks available have been deployed since the snow began and are working to treat streets as quickly as possible. Crews will continue their efforts throughout the day and into tomorrow morning, prioritizing emergency routes and main thoroughfares. However, snow is expected to continue throughout the night and conditions could worsen as temperatures drop. The National Weather service reports that the storm could continue until midday tomorrow (Tuesday) with sustained winds off the lake and gusts of 35 mph, resulting in blowing and drifting with visibility less than ¼ mile.
The Duluth Police Department reports many roads remain hazardous, already causing dozens of accidents. As of 2:00 p.m., there were at least 64 accidents reported. Some roads had been temporarily closed this morning due to traffic accidents but all roads are now reported open.
Again, please avoid unnecessary travel until the storm subsides and roads are cleared and treated. If travel is necessary, please use extreme caution and allow extra time to get to your destination and plenty of distance between vehicles.
Thank you for your cooperation and patience as crews continue to work to clear and treat city streets during these dangerous conditions.
