Boards and Commissions vacancies
The City of Duluth is currently seeking applicants for the following city boards and commissions openings occurring in the near future. Applications should be received in our office by February 1, 2010.
Alcohol, Gambling & Tobacco Commission - This commission investigates every application to sell alcoholic beverages and gambling premise permits within the City and makes an advisory recommendation to the City Council for granting or refusing licenses. The commission meets the 1st Wednesday at 4:45 p.m.
American Indian Commission - This commission ensures that the views of the American Indian community are incorporated in the decision making, future planning, and stewardship of the city of Duluth and works to increase American Indian community involvement in all aspects of community affairs in Duluth. The commission meets the 3rd Monday at 5:00 p.m.
Board of Zoning Appeals - This board hears and decides appeals from the decisions of the Building Official in the enforcement and interpretation of the Zoning Code. The board meets the 4th Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
Building Appeal Board - This board hears appeals from decisions by the Building Official interpretation of the State Building Code, the Duluth Housing Code and the handling of appeals pertaining to the Fire Chief's interpretation of the Fire Code. **Applicants to this board must work in or represent either a building trade union, finance, building material supply or residential building construction. The board meets the 2nd Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Civil Service Board - This board oversees matters relating to civil service employment within the city. The board meets the 1st Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.
Commission on Disabilities - This commission assesses the needs of disabled persons regarding matters such as employment, housing, transportation, accessibility and equal rights. The commission meets the 1st Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Community Development Committee - This committee reviews proposals for funding under the Community Development (CD) program. The committee meets the 4th Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
Duluth Human Rights Commission - This commission promotes cultural diversity, the elimination of hate, prejudice, and discrimination against persons or groups based on race, gender, religion or other status of the person or group; educates the community on issues of discrimination and cultural diversity; promotes the goals and objectives of the Minnesota Human Rights Act. The commission meets the 2nd Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
Duluth Public Arts Commission - This commission establishes criteria for selection of artists, locations for works of art and the works of art themselves which are to be paid for from the Municipal Arts Fund. The commission meets the 3rd Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Duluth Transit Authority - This authority administers the operation of the public transit system. **Applicants for this opening must reside in the 5th Council District of Duluth. The board meets the 4th Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
Environmental Advisory Council - This council promotes environmental awareness and advises and educates the city council, city administration and the community on environmental issues. **Applicants must either be environmental representatives or citizens of Duluth. The board meets the 1st Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
Heritage Preservation Commission - This commission investigates and reports on the historical, cultural and architectural significance of the buildings, structures, sites or objects proposed for special designation. **Applicants must either be preservation professionals or citizens of Duluth. The commission meets the 4th Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Housing and Redevelopment Authority - This authority deals with the improvement and revitalization of residential neighborhoods, urban renewal, construction and operation of senior citizen housing, and related matters. The board meets the last Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
Library Board - This board advises the Director, City Administration and City Council on Library polices, proposed new services, proposed new facilities and on the deletion of services and facilities. The board meets the 4th Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Parking Commission - This commission investigates and studies on- and off-street parking problems of broad significance occurring in the city and makes recommendations to the Administration and City Council concerning the solution of such problems. The commission meets on a Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. as needed.
Parks and Recreation Commission - This commission assists the Administration by making recommendations on issues that are pertinent to the development and or enhancement of existing or future recreational needs of this community. The commission meets the 2nd Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
Planning Commission - This commission advises the City Council on all planning and development matters including rezonings, issuance of special use permits and community development policies. The commission meets on the 2nd Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. and the 4th Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. if needed.
Special Board of Review - This board reviews assessment and classification of all property within the City; determines that all taxable property within the City is listed and properly valued; hears all persons feeling aggrieved by the assessment or classification of property and makes such adjustments as shall appear just. **Applicants for current openings on this board must either be a real estate broker or a real property valuator. The board meets as needed.
Technical Design Advisory Committee for the Downtown Waterfront Mixed Use-Design Review District (DWMX-D) - This committee reviews development proposals within the DWMX_D for consistency within the established design framework for the area and issues certificates of appropriateness where warranted. This committee meets the 3rd Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. as needed.
Tree Commission - This commission recommends and advises the city administration and the city council on policies, budgetary concerns and technical tree related issues. The commission meets the 3rd Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
Water and Gas Service Hearing Board - This board hears and decides appeals from water and gas applicants concerning disputes over charges for water or gas service or department decisions to terminate service or the department's denial of a prospective applicant's application for service. This board meets the 2nd Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. as needed.
