$365,000 Grant to Improve Sacred Heart Cathedral

[Duluth, MN] – The City of Duluth is proud to announce that Sacred Heart Music Center has been approved for a grant from the Minnesota Historical Society for $365,380 to restore the Sacred Heart Cathedral. The grant will help with structural improvements, make masonry repairs to the bell tower, and restore the roof to a historically accurate design. The Sacred Heart Cathedral is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Cathedral was designed by Architect Gerhard A. Tenbush in the late gothic revival design for the Catholic Diocese. It was constructed in 1896 and is home to the only non-remodeled Felgemaker organ in the United States. The Cathedral was deconsecrated and sold to the Sacred Heart Music Center in 1987. The Sacred Heart Music Center brings in performance artists and provides after school programming. This is the second grant from the Minnesota Historical Society’s Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant Program. The first grant was received in 2012 and helped stabilize the Cathedral’s spire.

The planned repairs will complete the necessary improvements to ensure the building’s future longevity for community programs and events. The project will be completed by the end of 2015.

This project has been financed in part with funds provided by the State of Minnesota from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund through the Minnesota Historical Society.
