At 10:05 am on Monday Jan 19th, 2015, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a porch fire in the West Duluth neighborhood.
The captain from the first arriving fire apparatus reported smoke coming from the front porch and indications of a working fire. The fire was extending up the outside of the house to the second floor. Crews made a quick knockdown of the fire and opened the porch roof to stop the advancement of the fire. Primary search of the house indicated the occupants had evacuated the home. One resident returned inside the house and had to be rescued. This individual was transported to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation. There were no other firefighter or civilian injuries.
19 firefighters responded from Spirit Valley, Gary, Lincoln Park and Downtown Fire Stations.
The home was occupied at the time of the fire and all residents had made it out prior to our arrival.
Damage is estimated in excess of $35,000.00
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office.
The Fire Department would like to remind citizens of the dangers associated with returning into fire buildings once you have exited.
