Duluth to Recognize Snow Angels with Golden Shovel Award – Nominations Being Accepted
[Duluth, MN] - Duluth is known for its beauty during all four seasons but also its strong community spirit. Although this winter’s snowfall hasn’t been as significant as previous years, the recent snow event is requiring Duluthians to get out their shovels and begin the often arduous task of shoveling sidewalks, parking lots and driveways. For many, this can pose a significant challenge; a challenge that is often met with compassion and generosity.
During even the worst snow storms, neighbors/individuals and businesses can be seen helping other members of the community. Many residents work hard to ensure that their sidewalks are cleared for pedestrians and students, and many also assist those that are unable to shovel due to injury, age or other factors.
The City wants to recognize individuals and groups who brave the wintry weather and go out of their way to lend a hand - and their shovel.
“We must make a community-wide effort to keep neighborhood sidewalks safe and accessible for everyone,” says Mayor Don Ness. “Sidewalks are a critical asset in our transit system for children and adults at all levels of mobility.”
“We are focusing on educating and alerting residents, business owners, landlords, renters and others on why it is so critical that we all maintain accessible sidewalks and walkways,” states Bob Grytdahl, City of Duluth’s Equal Opportunity Representative.
Duluthians are encouraged to nominate those individuals, groups, and businesses that go the extra mile to ensure that sidewalks, walkways and parking lots are cleared of snow and passable for everyone all winter long. “We want to hear about those folks who demonstrate a deep sense of community spirit,” Mayor Ness explains. “Our snow and ice covered sidewalks can be difficult for even the most able-bodied among us.”
Nominations will be reviewed by the Healthy Duluth Area Coalition and the City of Duluth Commission on Disabilities. Those selected among the nominations will have their efforts recognized at a Mayor’s Reception in the spring and will be given a “Golden Shovel” award.
The nomination form can be found online at www.duluthmn.gov/human-rights-office/ and paper forms are availale at Duluth City Hall, 411 West First Street, Room 313 (Human Resources).
