Public Open House Scheduled for Western Sports Corridor Mini-Master Plan
The City of Duluth Parks and Recreation Division is preparing a mini-master plan for the West Duluth Sports Corridor which includes Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium Complex, and the Heritage Sports Center.
A public open house is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2015 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the Wheeler Field House. Members of the public are invited to attend and provide input to help shape the future of the West Duluth Sports Corridor which includes Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium Complex, and the Heritage Sports Center. The open house is part of an eight month mini-master planning process for the corridor, which began in December 2014. The plan is expected to be completed by August 2015. A second open house, to review mini-master plan concepts, will be held in May.
Location: Wheeler Field House, 35th Ave W & Grand Ave, Duluth, MN 55807
Date/Time: Tuesday, March 3, 2015, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
The plan will identify improvements to establish a premier athletic destination for Northeast Minnesota. When completed, the mini-master plan will:
- Recommend improvements to Wheeler Athletic Complex and Field House.
- Address improvements to the Wade Stadium Complex. The mini-master plan will address the baseball and softball fields south of the stadium, parking, and circulation. Stadium improvements are being addressed in a separate study.
- Identify connectivity, signage, and identity improvements needed to create a cohesive corridor connecting Wheeler Athletic Complex, Wade Stadium Complex, and the Heritage Sports Center.
- Inform the preferred alignment for the Cross City Trail between the Heritage Sports Center and Wheeler Athletic Complex.
The open house will allow the public to learn about the project and provide input on needs and opportunities.
The open house will not have a set program and members of the public are invited to drop in any time throughout its duration to learn about the project and provide feedback to the planning team.
In addition to the open house, a questionnaire (www.surveymonkey.com/s/sportscorridor) is available until March 31, 2015. The questionnaire will help the City of Duluth understand how the sports corridor is being used today, how it can better serve residents, and how it can become an even more desirable location for regional tournaments and recreation. The results of the open houses and questionnaire will help inform the mini-master plan and future improvements.
