An electrical component failure in a lift station caused a system overflow at 60th Ave East & London Road.  The incident was discovered at 9:30 AM Monday January 25th.  A City of Duluth Utility Operations crew responded to the incident and the problem was resolved immediately.  All necessary steps are being taken to limit any public health hazard or potentially harmful effects on the environment.

Further investigation is being done to determine the cause.  Overflow volume is estimated to be less than 25,000 gallons.  The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency duty officer was notified immediately.

Residents should avoid contact with any sewer overflow due to the potential for exposure to disease-causing organisms. Residents are also asked to report any overflow from a manhole. Storm sewers and sanitary sewers may lift and move manhole covers creating a dangerous fall hazard when the overflow ceases. Contact the City of Duluth at 723-3333, 24 hours per day to report overflowing manholes or any open manhole.
