At 14:15 on Thursday April 30th, 2015 the Duluth Fire Department responded to a Two Alarm structure fire in a 4-plex Apartment Building. 4 Quint from the UMD fire station was first to arrive and reported heavy fire on the second and third levels of the three story building. The crew from 4 Quint immediately entered the building to initiate search and fire attack. Rescue 1 was next to arrive and while surveying the rear of the building Captain Scott Kleive and Firefighter Brian Black discovered an adult female that had her exit blocked by falling burning debris. The Rescue 1 crew was immediately able to rescue the female who was checked and cleared at the scene by Gold Cross Ambulance. Several pets were rescued from the fire including several cats, guinea pigs and fish. One cat perished in the fire.
The building was completely searched early in the event and the main body of fire was knocked down within an hour. The fire had extended into the multiple concealed spaces in the attic and walls causing 9 fire suppression units to spend several hours doing overhaul to completely extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Department's Fire Marshal Division. Damage is estimated to exceed $150,000
Fire Crews responded from Stations at UMD, Downtown, Woodland, Miller Hill, Lake Side and Lincoln Park. The DFD was also assisted by the Duluth Police Department, Gold Cross Ambulance, Minnesota Power, and Duluth Public Works. The Red Cross is assisting 7 residents displaced by the fire.
