Lakewalk Trail Closure Planned Between Portland Malt Shoppe and Fitgers Complex
 
[Duluth, MN] - The City is informing the public of repair work starting on June 1, 2015 on the stairs leading from the Portland Malt Shoppe down to the Lakewalk Trail (716 East Superior Street). This work will require closure of the stairs as well as the section of the Lakewalk that directly connects to the stairs. This work is required to rehabilitate the steel support structure and concrete landings.
 
In 2014, all of the concrete treads were replaced and temporary fixes were made to the landings in order to not disrupt public access. Additional work is needed this year to ensure safe and usable stairs for the public for the long term. The concrete landings will be replaced with Ipe wood for greater longevity and easier maintenance. Adjusted railings, removal of corrosion, and new paint will reset the life cycle on this structure.

The public will have access to the Lakewalk Trail from either the Fitgers Complex or Leif Erikson Park. The project will commence June 1, 2015 and will be finished in approximately nine weeks.
