Traffic Advisory
On Sunday August 30th, the Superior Man Triathlon will be held in the Harbor, Bay front Area and on London Road resulting in road closures.
The event starts at 6:30 a.m. when participants start in the Harbor and swim to a transition area behind the DECC on Harbor Drive. Boating traffic in the harbor will be limited at this time.
Between 7-7:30 a.m. participants transition to bicycles and travel through the Bayfront area, taking Michigan Street, Superior Street, London Road and the Highway 61 Expressway to Two Harbors where they turn around taking the scenic highway and the same route back to the DECC. During the bike portion of this event the following roads will be closed:
- Railroad Street from 5th Avenue West to Garfield Avenue
- Railroad Street westbound lane only, from Harbor Drive to 5th Avenue West
- Superior Street from 3rd Avenue East to 8th Avenue East
- Superior Street from 8th Avenue East to 10th Avenue East will be open to westbound traffic only.
- The parking lot next to VaBene Café will remain OPEN and is accessible from westbound Superior Street at 8th Avenue East
- Access to the Fitger's Ramp will be closed until about noon, however the exit will remain open.
- Michigan Street from 5th Avenue West to 4th Avenue East
- London Road from 10th Avenue East to 12th Avenue East
- 21st Avenue East from London Road down to Water Street (southbound lane closed
- The 21st Avenue East I-35 Ramps will be closed, however 26th Avenue East ramps will remain open.
- I-35 Ramps on 5th Avenue West will be affected. The northbound off-ramp and southbound on- ramp will remain open.
There will be a lane marked with cones for bicyclists only on:
- East side of 5th Avenue West
- Harbor drive up to Railroad Street
- Lower side of London Road from 12th Avenue East to 15th Avenue East.
- Lower side of London Road from 20th Avenue East to 21st Avenue East.
- Lower side of London Road from 26th Avenue East to the Highway 61 Expressway.
When bike participants return to the DECC they will transition from the bike portion of the race to running.
- Runners will travel up Harbor drive and around the Irvin taking the Lake walk down and back behind the Canal Park Lodge where they follow Lake Place Drive and enter back onto Railroad Street toward Garfield Avenue. For the 1st running lap only, runners will proceed to a turnaround post near Garfield Avenue and return on Railroad Street.
- After the 1st lap, runners will not travel further west than Bay front Park. They will turn left into the Bay front Park gravel lot, run behind the stage and continue onto the last lap on Harbor Drive.
- The last lap will take them into Bay front Park where they will finish near the Park Arches.
During the RUNNING PORTION of this event the following roads WILL BE CLOSED:
- Harbor Drive behind the DECC, from 5th Avenue West below the aquarium lot, to just below the east DECC Lot Entrance (east DECC Lot Entrance on Harbor Drive and 5th Avenue W Connector to Railroad St remain open).
- Upper West bound lane of Railroad Street from Lake Place Drive to 5th Ave West (bound remains open)
- Lower eastbound lane of Railroad Street from 5th Avenue West to Garfield Avenue (westbound remains open)
- DECC access is down Lake Avenue or 5th Avenue West to Railroad Street to either the main north gate on Railroad Street, or the east gate on Harbor Drive. From 6:30 a.m. until about 9:30 a.m. the east gate exit will be closed during the beginning of the BIKE PORTION of the event. That exit will re-open after all bikes have started and passed that point.
- Park Point is accessible down Lake Avenue.
- Roads should be open to normal traffic by approximately 3:00 p.m.
Drivers in the area of this event should be observant of No Parking signs, Detours, heavy pedestrian traffic, and Duluth Police Officers directing traffic.
