Traffic Advisory
The North Shore Inline Marathon Race will be held on Saturday September 19th. Several area roads will be closed for this event.
This year’s race includes inline Skaters, Roller Skiers, and Runners. The skate and roller ski course travels down Scenic Drive, then down London Road to 26th Avenue East where participants will go south on I-35, exiting onto the 5th Avenue West Ramp, turning left on 5th Avenue West, down to Harbor Drive behind the DECC to the finish line on Harbor Drive near the William Irvin Tour Ship. Runners will run up I-35 from 5th Ave West, through the tunnels, and turn around near London Road and then proceed back the same route.
The entire route will be closed to traffic, and parking on the route will be prohibited. Downtown Duluth and Canal Park will be completely open to traffic during this event.
Canal Park, Park Point, the Great Lakes Aquarium, and the DECC will be accessible using Lake Avenue to Railroad Street, or down 5th Avenue West to Railroad Street.
Road Closures:
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18 -starting at 4 pm:
Harbor Drive will be closed for Kid's Inline Sprint Races from Railroad Street near the Irvin, to the back ticket parking area of the DECC. The DECC parking area will remain accessible from the aquarium side of Harbor Drive. The Great Lakes Aquarium will be accessible during this event. Harbor Drive will re-open about 6:30 p.m.
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 19th
Starting at 5:00 a.m., the Scenic Highway will be closed from the Highway 61 Expressway to Two Harbors for Race Setup. Local traffic will be guided off the Scenic Highway toward the expressway.
Starting at 6:15 a.m., all southbound traffic on the Hwy 61 Expressway will be diverted onto Superior Street. 60th Avenue East will be closed from Tioga Street to Superior Street. Traffic will be diverted to 58th and 61st Avenues East. DTA Buses will follow this diversion and turn down 58th Avenue East to Superior Street.
London Road will be closed from 60th Avenue East to 26th Avenue East.Residents of Lakeshore Lutheran Home will be able to enter/exit their lot with assistance from officer posted there, between skaters when it is safe.
Chateau Apartments at 3800London Road: Residents can exit onto London Road going WEST ONLY, with assistance from the volunteer posted there, and will be sent up on 36th Avenue East. Access to the Chateau Apartments will be from 40th Avenue East with assistance from officers posted there.
Glensheen Mansion - Access to the Glensheen Mansion will be from 36th Avenue East, then west on London Road, with assistance from posted officers. Those exiting from Glensheen Mansion will turn west on London Road and will have to turn on 32nd Avenue East.
I-35 will be closed from 26th Avenue East to 5th Avenue west. South bound entrance ramps onto I-35 will be closed at 26th Avenue East and 21st Avenue East. North bound entrance ramps onto I-35 will be closed at Mesaba Avenue, 5th Avenue west viaduct, Lake Avenue, and 2nd Avenue East and Michigan Street.
South bound I-35 WILL NOT BE ACCESSABLE from the Lake Avenue Viaduct in 2015 due to road construction. You can access Southbound I-35 by taking Superior Street west to Mesaba Avenue then down, down to 5th Avenue West Viaduct or Railroad Street west to Garfield Avenue, then turn left.
The 5th Avenue West Viaduct will be limited to one lane down bound., to Southbound I-35, the Aquarium, the Connector to Railroad Street, or to the DECC. The up bound lane of 5th Avenue West will be closed to vehicle traffic.
The DECC Lot will remain open with access and exit FROM RAILROAD STREET ONLY. The 5th Avenue West exit will be closed. Exit from the DECC Lot will be from the parking ramp onto Railroad Street.
The Great Lakes Aquarium will be accessible from Railroad Street and 5th Avenue West. Exit from the Great Lakes Aquarium will be down the connector road to Railroad Street only.
Canal Park will be accessible down Lake Avenue.
1ST STREET WILL BE CLOSED FROM 6TH Avenue West to Mesaba Avenue. TRAFFIC WILL BE DIVERTED DOWN 6TH Avenue West to Superior Street and continue westbound.
Medical or any other emergency traffic to the INLINE SKATE FINISH LINE AREA should enter the DECC North Gate on Railroad Street and proceed through the lot towards the DECC east gate (near the Irvin Tour Ship).
Duluth Police are asking individuals driving in the area to use caution, watch for pedestrians, road closures, Duluth Police Officers, Duluth Police Reserves and volunteers directing traffic in the area.
