The Duluth Police Department's Citizens' Police Academy (CPA) is an informative learning process that provides an opportunity for citizens to receive 11 weeks of both classroom and field instruction regarding the various responsibilities facing our officers. CPA attendees are also made aware of the procedures and techniques used by officers in a variety of scenarios, together with the rationale and justification in support of those procedures or techniques. The academy has been offered in the Spring to those who live and work in Duluth since 1997.
Class attendees receive information and instruction on such issues as use of force, narcotics enforcement, patrol operations, criminal investigations, death investigation, demonstrations by the K-9 Unit, and much more. All of this is enhanced by their opportunity to ride along with an officer. Participants also can choose to shoot some of the firearms officers are assigned.
Through these academy classes we hope to foster a better understanding of police operations and how we serve our community. The 2016 Citizen Police Academy will begin Wednesday evening, March 16th (6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) and run each Wednesday for 11 weeks ending Wednesday evening, May 25th.
