SUBJECT: Structure Fire
BY: Assistant Chief Chris Martinson
NATURE OF INCIDENT: Fire
CASE NO.: 16003738
INCIDENT DATE: 4/18/2016
INCIDENT TIME: 16:53
INCIDENT LOCATION: 633 E. 4th Street
The Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 633 E. 4th Street. A fire company that was very close to the scene when the call came in was the first to arrive and found heavy smoke in an apartment at the rear of the building. Fire companies found hot embers between the ceiling above and the next floor. The area was opened up to search for extension and none was found, the firefighters were able to contain the fire to one area. The occupants of the fire apartment were able to escape unharmed. A search was done of nearby apartments to locate persons and to evacuate the building. Firefighters quickly brought this fire under control. A fast acting neighbor who smelled smoke was able to grab a fire extinguisher and use it on the fire before it became too large. The family in the fire apartment is being assisted by the Red Cross who is providing lodging for that family. The fire was investigated by the Duluth Fire Marshals office and the cause was determined to be two children playing with fire. No other information is available at this time.
The Duluth Fire Department would again like to remind all citizens to check that they have working smoke alarms in their places of residence.
